Have you considered a parquet floor for your home? Not only is parquet durable, but the patterns available for hardwood are stunning as you can see from these examples of parquet floor inspiration from around the world. And, these aren’t just historic flooring but also contemporary examples.

Are you ready to explore?

What is Parquet Flooring?

Parquet flooring features patterns such as herringbone, chevron, and Versailles in wood floors. Instead of having planks installed side-by-side, they are set in intricate arrangements in repeating patterns that provide durability, stability, and visual interest.

Interestingly, according to Ten homes with decorative parquet wooden flooring,

“Parquet flooring rose in popularity during the 1600s as it became a favoured option with European aristocracy, offering an alternative to decorative marble floors that required less maintenance.”

No surprise, then, to discover that many famous European palaces – including Versailles and the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg – are filled with stunning parquet floors.

Where Do You Find Parquet Floors?

In addition to famous European buildings, you can find parquet flooring in historic American homes – such as the Hegeler Carus Mansion in Illinois – and on basketball courts including those of the teams of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In The most beautiful parquet floors of the NBA, you can explore ten of the more interesting ones. Note that the article focuses also on graphics whereas the parquet patterns are what you’ll truly enjoy:

  • Boston Celtics
  • Charlotte Hornets
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Brooklyn Nets
  • Orlando Magic
  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Toronto Raptors
  • Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Memphis Grizzlies
  • Golden State Warriors

Even the Detroit Pistons have recently unveiled a new court design!

More interesting, though, is seeing how parquet floors fit into day-to-day living in modern-day settings.

Parquet Floor Inspiration From Homes Around the World

Here are inspiring examples from several design-focused sources.

Ten Inspiring Homes With Parquet

The article mentioned above – Ten homes with decorative parquet wooden flooring – details ten beautiful parquet patterned floors. Be sure to check out the images.

In a 1930s apartment in Portugal,

“The floor is comprised of blocks of different tones which are arranged to create a checkerboard-style pattern that is framed by strips of light wood.”

An apartment in Russia was renovated to look like a Parisian apartment with “reclaimed-oak parquet flooring sourced from Italy...” Each grouping of four squares forms an X pattern.

Parquet floors in a herringbone pattern flow throughout a Victorian terraced home in London. Also in the UK, a renovation has “blanketed the floors of the 19th-century apartment in warm oak parquet flooring which was arranged in a herringbone pattern. The wood complements the stark white walls throughout the property.

Here’s an interesting way to use a herringbone parquet pattern: to draw the eye from one point of a space to another.

Restored parquet can complement a modernist look and feel as can a newly created chevron-patterned floor.

In a Dutch townhouse, herringbone-patterned oak flooring creates continuity between different spaces whereas a muted chevron pattern does the same in a Lithuanian apartment.

A 1970s Portuguese apartment is,

“…defined by its use of wood seen through its vast pale herringbone-patterned parquet flooring and blonde panelling that frames skylights across the ceiling. Wood and marble were arranged in a herringbone pattern to define the apartment’s different zones and spaces.”

The Different Types of Hardwood Parquet Patterns

A Guide to Parquet Wood Floor Patterns details the following parquet patterns:

  • Versailles
  • Aremberg
  • Chantilly
  • Monticello

The images are marvelous, and the article even includes interpretations in different types of wood such as the Chantilly pattern in walnut.

The article considers these next three patterns to be popular and contemporary parquets especially if you use non-traditional grey, black or white finishes:

  • Herringbone
  • Chevron
  • Hexagon

It also includes a diagram with many interpretations for Herringbone parquet such as the brick pattern, diagonal basket, square basket, square or diagonal herringbone, single herringbone and double herringbone.
