Jacobean Stain: An Extremely Popular Hardwood Floor Finish

Are you familiar with the stain color Jacobean? It’s a mid to dark stain with rich overtones that remains one of the most popular colors in hardwood floors. In fact, for many, it’s considered a classic stain color, that never goes out of style.

It’s neither light like natural or the trendy blonde stains, nor dark like ebony. Jacobean is a color that lets you see the wood grain and even the color variation between boards. It’s so versatile, that you’ll find it both in houses with traditional design and also with contemporary design styles.

The project detailed on this page is located in Rochester Hills, Michigan. It features hardwood floors that were sanded and refinished with a Jacobean stain.

SANDING AND REFENISHING OF NEW INSTALLATION AND EXISTING FLOOR, IN DINING AND LIVING ROOM,IN ROCHESTER HILLS,MI.

Two Part Project: New Wood Floor Installation + Sanding & Refinishing Existing Floors + Jacobean Stain to Match

This home had wood floors already installed in the living room and dining room. The homeowner wanted to add a hardwood floor to the family room, and then sand and refinish all three rooms so they would all match with the same stain color.

Although the living and dining room floorboards were 2-1/4″ wide, the newly installed hardwood floor in the family room consisted of 6″-wide planks in red oak to differentiate this room from the other two more formal spaces.

The newly installed hardwood floor area measured approximately 650 sq ft.

The project took 7 days to complete, starting with the new installation using a glue-down process, and then the sanding and refinishing process.

When it came time to confirm the stain color options, the homeowner wanted to see samples on the floor of two stains:

    • Antique Brown
    • Jacobean

By seeing actual samples, the homeowner was able to gauge how the stain colors looked in the actual rooms given the natural light flowing through. The winner was the classic Jacobean stain color.

Protecting the Jacobean Stain and the Hardwood Floors

The last step in the (re)finishing process was the actual finish which protects the floors from traffic, and seals in the stain color.

In this case, the homeowner selected Bona Traffic HD in a satin sheen.

As you can see from the images on this page, the Jacobean stain color blends beautifully with the fireplace tile, the built-in cabinets on both sides of the fireplace, the wall color, and even the sun’s September rays smiling at this stunning combination.
