Nutmeg Wood Stain
As a hardwood stain, nutmeg is a rich medium-brown finish that is warm and elegant.
The project detailed on this page is located in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan alongside Lake St. Clair. It features hardwood floors that were sanded and refinished with a nutmeg stain.
New Hardwood Floors For Center Hall Colonial
This beautiful center-hall colonial sits in a small Michigan town that is well known for its unique style and where each house looks different. You’ll find a harmonious combination of traditional architectural styles – French-style, English Tudor as well as New England colonial, antebellum, and brick colonial – and a great deal of woodwork with amazing character and details impossible to duplicate today. For example, in the image above notice the beadboard ceiling.
The house was newly renovated with 3 ¼” red oak hardwood flooring newly installed on the main floor and upstairs hallway.
The sanding process made use of the Michigan Hardwood Floor Services 99.9% dustless system. The project also included sanding and refinishing a staircase that led from the first floor to the upstairs.
Below you see the main floor with stairs heading up. On the far wall (on the left as you enter the home), the space includes a magnificent fireplace.
Notice the ceiling again as well as the wall alongside the stair railing.

This home includes many windows, beautiful open spaces, and contrasting black trim around the doors, french doors, windows, and the fireplace area. Interestingly, the sanded wood color doesn’t quite offer enough contrast with those strong dark elements.
Nutmeg Hardwood Floor Stain Adds Just the Right Level of Contrast
However, with the nutmeg stain, the hardwood floors stand up to the bold touches.
The homeowners wanted a medium color to bridge the divide between stark white walls and dark trim. They chose Bona standard color nutmeg which makes a good contrast with the white walls, the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the open space connecting the different areas of the house.
The nutmeg-stained hardwood floors were finished using a water base finish with a satin sheen.
In the next image, you see the landing at the top of the stairs. Notice the wall detailing.
After applying the last coat of finish, the floors were finished. The homeowner really liked how the nutmeg stain color warmed the whole space, creating a welcoming ambiance.
