This particular whole house sanding and refinishing project shows you the beauty of bringing walnut wood brown floors back to life.
Darker Natural Hardwood Colors in a Whole House Refinishing Project
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that solid hardwood has been here forever. It has been used for decades and decades and has stoically resisted all of the interior design cycles and is always an inspired choice for any style. Even more, for the last several years now, there has been a worldwide trend in terms of interior design that prefers hardwood floors in their natural colors, be they light, or a growing preference for wood in darker natural colors.
Walnut Wood: An Aristocrat Among Wood Species
Walnut wood is considered if you allow me the comparison, an aristocrat among wood species. With its beautiful grain design, its specific color, and the dark and elegant shades, this wood can contribute significantly to the creation of a space characterized by refinement and elegance.
I’d like to share with you an example of a project I worked on that involved Walnut. This fun-loving couple found their dream home: a pristine custom lakefront house with beautiful walnut hardwood floors throughout much of the main floor area.

This house had wall-to-wall windows, and the hardwood was widely exposed to the sunlight and suffered a little bit of discoloration. Furthermore, the hardwood was previously finished with an oil-based finish. Oil-modified finishes turn to an unsightly yellow appearance over time.
They hired Michigan Hardwood Floor Services to sand and refinish this beautiful walnut wood installed at a 45-degree angle.

Walnut wood is very sturdy, it has a strong and smooth wooden structure.

I was pleasantly surprised, while sanding this floor, by its excellent condition.
Maybe other homeowners of a house like this, situated on the shore of the lake, would have considered installing an engineered hardwood floor instead for its stability in conditions of high humidity. This walnut hardwood, however, is another proof that when everything is done professionally (installation, sanding and refinishing, care and maintenance) nothing performs better than solid wood.

After sanding, the floor was finished with one coat of Bona water base sealer and two coats of Bona Traffic HD water base finish. Bona’s waterborne finishes retain a clear, non-yellowing appearance.

We recommended to our clients that they make sure to close the curtains or blinds on sunny summer days or consider investing in a screen protector for extra protection.

After the refinishing process was completed, we gave back life to this beautiful floor, where each individual piece of wood has a color with a unique appearance.

These homeowners were extremely pleased with the outcome of their project, and that level of customer satisfaction is what we strive for here at Michigan Hardwood Floor Services!
