Today, we propose an exercise of imagination: close your eyes and envision a majestic tree with its branches reaching out. Now, put the landscape aside and imagine the interior of your dream home: spacious rooms, generous openings, and natural light streaming in through expansive windows. What you get is the essence of the project we’re about to unveil in this blog.
Project Details
This hardwood floor project was performed in a new custom-built house in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The project itself consisted of installing approximately 1,750 square feet of 2 ¼” Red Oak in a straight, traditional pattern, which, in addition with the unique herringbone floor patter with brass inlay and picture frame border in the foyer, complete the entire home decor. It was challenging and also equally rewarding.
Herringbone Floor Pattern with Brass Inlay Picture Frame Border

Though a herringbone floor pattern looks great in any space, there is one area of the home where it makes a significant statement. This homeowner opted to make a statement from the moment you walk in the door by choosing to having us install this herringbone with brass inlay in the entryway. The herringbone pattern at the entrance resembled a tree’s robust trunk, a key design element that set the tone for this entire project. In the remainder of the home, the straight, traditional pattern installation allows for a seamless flow to both sides of the house, mirroring the natural growth of a tree’s branches rooted in its trunk.
Is It Challenging to Install a Herringbone Floor Pattern?

Yes, and no. This herringbone pattern requires a lot of handwork and cutting. The wood milling process heavily influences the quality of the parquet. This step is not just about shaping the wood, but it also determines how the parquet will be installed and how it will perform in the long run. But I don’t shy away from a challenge! On the contrary, I embrace it because it’s an opportunity for me to use the skills I have and build upon them in some cases.
Handcrafted Wood Working Technique

Using time-tested European woodworking techniques, I hand-planed and cut the herringbone hardwood slats in my workshop. Each wooden board was individually milled with a tongue at one end and a groove at the other, requiring precision and care to ensure a perfect fit during installation. This precision milling technique ensures that each individual board serves its
purpose perfectly. One board becomes the left side, another the right, and they all interlock seamlessly, resulting in a more robust and sturdier floor(miuvcoatedfloors.com/herringbone-chevron-versailles-wood-parquet-floors).
Bras Inlay to Complete The Herringbone Pattern

Another unique element that the homeowner wanted to include with this herringbone parquet pattern was a brass inlay. This non-ferrous metal, brass, when combined with wood, adds a unique and distinct look to the floor, setting it apart from the rest. It was the final touch that truly brought the herringbone pattern to life.
Finishing Touches

The wood chosen for this project was Red Oak. With its enduring popularity among hardwood floor options, Red Oak is the ideal solution for this project. With its crimson shades of brown, red, and pink, red oak offers an ideal balance between beauty, accessibility, and durability.
Special Walnut Stain Color To Complete The Look

For the stain color, the designer chose Special Walnut, and for the finish, a satin water base finish. Special Walnut stain is an excellent genuine brown color. It is neutral, not too dark, it has a slightly cooler, gray undertone that helps tone down the oak’s reddish tones, creating a rich, natural-looking finish while highlighting the grain of the wood.
Likewise, the satin finish for the water base sheen looks beautiful with this stain color. As the stain and satin finish age over a few months, they will create a lovely glow for the entire floor. It won’t be dull as a matte finish, but also won’t be too shiny like a semi-gloss sheen.
Final Result of This Project
As mentioned above, this project involved installing new hardwood floors in a new construction home. Initially, I hesitated to work with builders, but this project was a fortunate exception. The collaboration with a great builder and the invaluable input from wonderful homeowners were key factors in making this project a success.
