The finest tools
and experienced sanding & refinishing
professionals.
Most hardwood floors are capable of sanding and refinishing multiple times over their lifetime. For these reasons, hardwood floors last beyond a lifetime and are one of the most desirable floor coverings in the remodeling and new construction industry.
Specialized in Sanding & Refinishing New and Existing Hardwood Floors and Stairs
Michigan Hardwood Floor Services specializes in sanding and refinishing new and existing hardwood flooring, stairs, as well as restoration of historic hardwood floors. A home’s staircase provides the first impression that greets visitors when they walk into a home. Wooden stairs, which are often the main point of the entry’s design, surround the home with a warm welcoming aura.
Dustless Sanding Equipment
While the process of refinishing your hardwood floors and stairs may be tedious and time-consuming, the finished product is worth more than the work. Rest assured though, this is what most of our jobs revolve around – beautifully restoring hardwood floors without the dust, scent, and hassle of traditional hardwood floor refinishing.
Our sanding and refinishing process is enhanced by the use of high-tech dustless sanding system – the Bona Atomic DS Trailer – which generates 99.8% less dust than traditional sanding and is highly recommended for those suffering from allergies and asthma.
Michigan Hardwood Floor Services Sanding & Refinishing Process Methodology
Although this may not be apparent, the sanding process depends on the floor’s shape and quality. We usually start the sanding process with the finest grid possible, which takes less time and wastes less hardwood. For the following step, leveling, we use the next consecutive grit of sandpaper – we never jump more than one grit.
After sanding and buffing, we employ the most thorough vacuuming process to remove all the dirt and dust that could potentially impair the finish quality (finish as the final outcome or finish as in the product – satin/semi-gloss finish).
Next, we apply three coats of high-quality commercial-grade urethane and buff the hardwood floor between coats. This process eliminates the grain raising and knocks down any imperfections, creating the smoothest surface possible for the last coat of finish.
Stain Color Customized After Hardwood Floor Installation
Each time a floor is sanded, the appearance can be tailored to fit the decoration scheme of the room or area where the floor is installed. One of the highlights of receiving these on-site services is our ability to customize the color after installation.
Wood species such as Walnut and Brazilian Cherry are as unique as the tree they come from. They have a lot of character, and their beautiful natural color surpasses any stain on the market. The imperfection of that natural color is exactly what gives it charm and enlivens the wood — wouldn’t it be a shame to color a Walnut, Cherry, or Acacia wood? We stand to lose so much by gaining a stern uniformity.
However, if you prefer to do away with the red color of your Brazilian Cherry floors, for example, we can provide you with a custom stain that fits most closely the vision of your project.
For more common solid hardwoods like White or Red Oak, there are more options. One can keep the natural color, if you want to see the real wood and the fingerprint of the grain or a medium or dark brown shade can be applied, to fit the décor of the room. To produce the desired effect of the stain above the wood, we always water pop the floor when using medium to dark stain. Water popping a floor opens the grain and allows the floor to take the stain uniformly throughout the whole floor.
We’ve discussed a few things to keep in mind when choosing the right color for your floor, however, the most important thing to do when choosing a stain is to ask to see samples on the floor first. We always encourage customers to choose between 1-3 colors of stain and apply those colors on the floor. It is very important to see what these colors look like on your floor because it will be different from how that same stain color looks in a home store, a picture from a magazine, or even manufacturer’s samples.
(Note: the two samples above are on white oak.)
Specializing in Water-Based Hardwood Floor Finishes
When it comes to finishes, we specialize in water-based finishes because not only are they environmentally friendly, GreenGuard Certified, and very durable, but they also have a clear appearance and will resist turning yellow over time. They have a mild odor when applied and will dry in about two to three hours.
The master craftsman of our team is a consummate professional who cares deeply about the quality of his work. What separates us from other hardwood refinishing companies is our craftsmanship combined with the latest wood floor sanding equipment and materials used.

This is something which may be hard to do when you’re dealing with a salesman or estimator during the quoting process. We take pride in our work, and when you deal with Michigan Hardwood Floor Services, you’ll always be communicating with the same person.
Are you a member of the National WoodFlooring Association (NWFA)?
Michigan Hardwood Floor Services is a member of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) and a NWFA Certified Professional Craftsman. Victor is very involved with the NWFA association, the only trade association devoted to the hardwood floor industry.
May I have a quote over the phone?
We completely understand that it is difficult for you to choose a hardwood floor company, invest a substantial amount of money into your project, and only be able to see the results at the very end. However, we are a service business, and shopping for a hardwood floor company is way different than car shopping for example. No project that we’ve worked on has ever been the same, and that is why we prefer to give the In-Home Evaluation – to see what your project entails and answer any questions you may have. We want to honor your wishes for the vision of your project, and this can only be done if we see the project in person. Once we meet and discuss the needs of your floors, we will provide you with a quote via email whose prices are final.
We are committed to the safety and protection of our environment and have over 15 years and counting of experience servicing the southeastern part of Michigan.
What types of products do you use? Are the products you use environmentally friendly?
Michigan Hardwood Floor Services works with water-based hardwood floor finishes as well as friendly instant curing finishes with low VOC and GreenGuard Certified. We have invested in the most state-of-the-art dustless system available – the Atomic Dust Containment trailer which evacuates the airborne dust out of your house, thus being able to deliver a safe, eco-friendly hardwood floor refinishing process.
Do I need to leave my house?
Believe it or not, this is one of the main questions I receive from my customers. The answer is no, you do not need to leave your house throughout duration of your project. Our products are environmentally friendly, with low volatile organic compounds (VOC) and GreenGuard Certified.
